The Waves of the Lord

ONE

When I stood in the surf with my toes in the sand,

   Stepped back and saw scars in the dirt,

In just a few waves it was all washed away,

   God’s touch had transformed what was hurt.

And I see how the God of this whole universe,

   Makes things new with a wipe of His hand.

But it takes a few waves of the sea passing by

   Before we understand.

When I stood in the road with my back to the Lord,

  Into darkness I ran many miles.

Knew if I turned around He’d be waving me back,

   And the darkness would flee from His smile.

But I trudged on alone in my folly and pain,

And my unrelenting pride.

Then I turned, rediscovered The Light and The Love,

  Where I’d never need to hide!

Now I stand on a hill with the Lord near to me,

   Watched him step ahead and call.

He beckons me forward with waves and a song,

  Says He’ll catch me if I fall.

And we dance in the swirl of this whole universe,

   Like the rolling of the sea...

He carries me onward on currents of love,

   and keeps singing “FOLLOW ME!”
